Enterprise Legacy Modernization with Generative AI
Legacy modernization is not about converting old code. It is about preserving and transforming decades of accumulated business knowledge.
Exploring how Generative AI can help organizations recover business rules, preserve institutional knowledge, and modernize mission-critical enterprise systems—with human validation and governance.

The Problem
Mission-critical legacy systems contain far more than old code. Over decades, they accumulate business rules, decisions, exceptions, policies, processes, and operational knowledge.
Much of that knowledge may be incompletely documented—or not documented at all. Some remains with the people who designed, maintained, supported, and operated these systems.
How do we modernize the technology without losing the business knowledge that made the enterprise work?
1. Legacy Systems
2. GenAI-Assisted Discovery
3. Recovered Business Knowledge
4. Validation & Governance
The Approach
5.Modernization
6.Verification & Testing
What GenAI Changes
GenAI gives us a practical way to investigate, connect, compare, question, document, test, and surface ambiguity across decades of enterprise artifacts at a scale that was not previously practical.
It does not make recovered knowledge authoritative. Human expertise, validation, and governance remain essential to establishing meaning, resolving ambiguity, and authorizing modernization.
GenAI assists discovery - humans establish authenticity, completeness and authority.
Questions Worth Investigating
Legacy modernization raises questions that technology alone cannot answer. This research explores propositions about recovering business knowledge, applying GenAI responsibly, preserving institutional memory, and determining where human expertise, validation, and governance remain essential.
These are working propositions—not conclusions. They are intended to be investigated, challenged, refined, and, where the evidence requires it, rejected.
About George
George Agbanrin has spent more than four decades designing, developing, supporting, maintaining, and modernizing mission-critical enterprise systems across public- and private-sector organizations. His experience spans legacy platforms, databases, business applications, and the institutional knowledge embedded within them.
Today, his work explores how Generative AI can assist organizations in recovering that knowledge, understanding legacy systems, and approaching modernization responsibly—with human expertise, validation, governance, and verification remaining central to the process.
The Future Begins with What We Choose to Preserve
The Future Begins with What We Choose to Preserve
Modernization should not begin by asking what technology can replace. It should begin by understanding what business knowledge must survive.
This work is an invitation to investigate how Generative AI, human expertise, and responsible governance can help organizations carry that knowledge forward.
